Why Does My SWR Reading Look Wrong?
Short answer: on an analyzer, a handheld whip is missing half of itself. Get it away from metal, give it back its ground plane, and the reading will make sense. Here's why, and how to test it properly.
Your whip is only half the antenna
Handheld whips, ours and everyone else's, are monopoles. A monopole is half of an antenna. The other half is the ground plane: on a handheld, that's the radio chassis and the hand holding it.
Our Foul Weather Whip V2 dual band is a quarter wave on 2m, which works out to a three-quarter wave on 70cm. Stock rubber duck antennas are monopoles too. They just use a coil to make a short antenna act electrically longer. Same physics, same problem on a bare analyzer.
Screw the whip onto an analyzer or SWR meter and that other half is gone. The antenna doesn't stop needing it. It goes looking for a ground plane in whatever is closest:
- The rebar and metal inside a concrete or stone counter
- A metal pole, post or railing
- A chain-link fence, a vehicle, a metal bench
- The analyzer case and the outside of your test cable
Each of those becomes part of the antenna and moves the reading. That's why the SWR shifts when you pick the cable up, move a foot to the left, or touch the analyzer. You're not measuring the antenna. You're measuring the antenna plus whatever it borrowed.
Also expect some difference between instruments. A NanoVNA, a professional analyzer and an inline SWR meter won't agree exactly on the same antenna. Small differences are normal. Big swings almost always come from the test setup.
How to test it properly
- Calibrate at the feed point. Run an Open / Short / Load calibration at the feed point, the end of the cable where the antenna attaches, not at the analyzer port. Otherwise the cable is part of every measurement.
- Stay away from metal. Get clear of counters, poles, fences, vehicles and anything else metal, and keep your hands and body back from the antenna while it sweeps.
- Give it a ground plane. Don't let the antenna pick its own. Add a 19 in tiger tail at the feed point, or set the feed point on a metal pizza tray.
- Sweep the whole band. Look at SWR across the band the antenna is built for, not a single frequency, and make sure you're testing the right band. A GMRS antenna will read high on 2m because it isn't built for 2m.
What you might see and why
| What you see | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| SWR high on a bare analyzer | No ground plane. Add a tiger tail or pizza tray. |
| Reading changes when you move or touch the cable | The cable is acting as the ground plane. Add a tiger tail or pizza tray. |
| Reading changes when you move the setup | The antenna is borrowing nearby metal. Move away from it. |
| Dip lands off-frequency | Nearby metal detuning it, or calibration somewhere other than the feed point. |
| High SWR on one band only | Testing outside the band the antenna is tuned for. |
Low SWR isn't the goal
A dummy load has perfect SWR and radiates almost nothing. A good antenna balances match, bandwidth and radiation, so a slightly higher SWR on a well-designed whip can outperform a "perfect" reading on a lossy one. Read more on our How We Test page.
The best test is on the air
Your whip was built to run on a radio in your hand. Once your bench reading looks reasonable, put it on the radio and compare on the air: signal reports, repeater access, and side-by-side against your old antenna.
